Family Pasta Night

Spaghetti, Baked Ziti, Meatballs, Macaroni, Pasta Salad, Chicken Pesto Pasta, Cookies and Cupcakes filled the tables as family played Uno, Tic-Tac Toe, Sorry, Connect 4, Mancala and many more games. Families and students interacted with each other as the room became full of laughter, cheering, and celebrations of victories.

Feinstein Leadership School

SouthSide Elementary has partnered with the Feinstein Foundation to provide students encouraging incentives for their good deed from our Jr. Scholars. Over one hundred thousand students in grades K through 6 in 270 Rhode Island elementary schools have participated in the Feinstein Good Deeds program as well as students in several other states around the country. Students are provided with journals in which they record their good deeds and other acts of kindness that make a positive difference in the lives of others. Teachers are provided with instructional guidance and other incentives including grants for projects they undertake with their classes to help better their communities.

Holiday Food Drive

During the month of October SouthSide Elementary held their annual Holiday Food Drive to collect canned goods for Thanksgiving. With the participation of our students and staff we were able to collect 383 canned goods and 94 non-perishable items making a total of 477 items collected. All of the goods were donated to the Amos House to help support families during Thanksgiving. Happy Holidays!!!

Box Tops Classroom Challenge

In hopes of bringing some life to our Box Tops Program we set out a challenge to all of our students and teachers. The classroom that collected the most box tops would win an Ice Cream Party. The winner of the challenge was the 2nd grade classroom collecting 143 box tops followed by 3rd grade (109), 1st grade (96), and Kindergarten (92)

Family Wellness Night

Health & Wellness is an important aspect to life. Staff and community partners collaborated to host various informational booths, activities and workshops in promoting health and wellness. Special thanks to City of Providence Healthy Communities Office, Neighborhood Health, URI SNAP, Sodexho, The Flu Clinic, Code Red, and all participating families, staff, and PTO. 

Back to School BBQ

Food! Smiles! Laughter! Drums! Just an overall great time at the Back to School BBQ: Meet & Greet. Families, and staff showed up in great style with good energy. The atmosphere was joyful thanks to the soulful music, and drums being played along the soothing melody, kids getting their face painted, and burgers being cooked on grill. There were plenty of food, smiles and laughter all over the place. New teachers meeting and greeting new and current students along with their families and families reuniting with old staff.

Professional Development Week

As school quickly approached teachers and staff joined together to prepare for the start of the 2017-18 school year. Teachers and staff participated in a (3) day professional development training, reviewing school policies, strategies for proactive classroom management, academic interventions, blended learning strategies and much more. To end the training staff visited a local community business to discuss the role of the teacher within the community and development of students.
