2nd Grade State House Tour

Thanks to the wonderful State House staff and State Representative Grace Diaz for providing a fun and interactive tour and good lunch. The second graders of had the opportunity to tour the State House and learn some interesting facts about the state of Rhode Island. State Rep Diaz meet with the students and provided them with lunch. It was a fun and great opportunity for some of SouthSIde's Future Leaders.

B-I-N-G-O. What better way to celebrate Dr. Seuss Read Across America Week than winning new books to read. A night of fun were everyone won something. BOUNS Time. Many participants thought they were only going to receive books but ever so often a bonus number was called out and if participants had that number they could choose one prize from a table of random gifts.

On Friday, January 24, SouthSide Elementary held a special event to celebrate  National School Choice Week.  During  community meeting time Senator Metts stopped by to talk to students about the impact of community service. During lunch students watched  SouthSide's version of the school choice video. They were then greeted by the school mascot: Sharky. Sharky also joined Board Member Eilleen Hayes as they visited each class to read a special book.

Multicultural Night 2017                                     Posted January 24, 2017


SouthSide Elementary is comprised of 22 different cultures and ethnic groups. On January 17th, the cultures, ethnicity, food, and appreciation for one another was on full display. Family members showed up in numbers to support and view student work and displays from around the world. As families arrived into the community room there was a table from wall to wall full of our cultural dishes. The melting pot of SouthSide Elementary smelled so delicious. After families grabbed some food the excitement began. The entire room marveled in excitement and joy as we listended, watched, and engaged in some special entertainment. Thanks to the performances by Grupo Archiris, Krook Rock & son, Case Closed, and Raffini our multicultural night was a night to remember.

Family Pasta Night                                         Posted December 1, 2016


On November 16th, SouthSide staff and community members hosted the first Family Pasta Night. As families and their guest arrived in the transformed community room they were greeted by parent volunteers and welcomed into an Italian-style cafe. Their ears were filled with soothing vocals and sounds from the guitar as Coach Z played the night away. The sweet smell of pasta filled the air as the room quickly began to fill up. SouthSide staff graciously served the families and their guest. As stomachs began to fill up the activities rolled out and families were socializing and having a a fun filled time.

What a joy to see so many families interacting, kids moving from station to station with laughter, and community organizations spreading important information. Families were able to get their blood pressure checked, obtain free flu shots, received information regarding health insurance, and available clinics. There was also a healthy cooking demo, refreshing smoothies, Yoga, Zumba for the kids, a Martial Arts session along with a Hip Hop Workshop and Music therapy activity.

Adams Farm Field Trip                    Posted October 27, 2016


Our Kindergarteners and 1st Graders took their annual trip to Adams Farm in Cumberland, RI. Students enjoyed a bumpy hayride up anddown through the character field farm. They got to pet       the sheep, feed the cows, chickens and pigs. Shortly after they headed through the shady corn maze finding their way through the tall cornstocks. Community Helpers Day               Posted September 24, 2016


We have many helpers in our community. The students at SouthSide are not only reading about and exploring the community helpers but they also got to meet some helpers from the Providence community. Fire Fighter Stan, Mr. Boo the Barber, Officer Deschamps, Detective Robersen, and Sergeant Wheeler came and spent some time with the kids informing them on how they make an impact in the community . They also talked to the kids about what they can do to help out in their communities and be the change.

Back to School BBQ

Food! Smiles! Laughter! Music! Just an overall great time at the Back to School BBQ: Meet & Greet. Families, staff, and community members showed up in great style with good energy. The atmosphere was joyful thanks to  the live guitarist, the balloon animals floating throughout the playground, kids getting their face painted, and burgers being cooked on grill. There were smiles and laughter all over the place. New teachers meeting and greeting new and current students along with their families and families reuniting with old staff.

Professional Development Week

As school quickly approaches new teachers and staff join together to prepare for the start of the 2016-17 school year at SouthSide. Teachers and staff participated in a CPR/First Aid training, learned strategies for proactive classroom management, and engaged in a responsive classroom and collaborative proactive solutions workshop.
